Worth it to submit cleaned coins for grading?
I just went through my in-laws' coin collection. Among them he has about 20 or 25 common-date morgans and a 1935 peace dollar, all in lower mint state, probably MS60-MS63. I'm assuming these are worth submitting to PCGS?
Now then, he also has a 1821 capped bust half and a 1877 trade dollar. I'd grade both AU-55 or so, except they've obviously been cleaned with a cloth. Tiny fine scratches abound. Will PCGS send these back and pocket his money, or are these still worth submitting to another outfit such as NGC? |
Re: Worth it to submit cleaned coins for grading?
If you submit them to PCGS or NGC and they determine that the coins have indeed been cleaned they will return the coins to you in a "body bag" and you will be charged for submitting them. If you really would like to have them graded by a third party then I suggest sending them to ANACS as they will authenticate and grade them and note the problem (ie cleaned) on the slab.

Yep, ANACS... and depending on their rarity and condition, having them graded that way can make them easier to sell at the high end of wholesale value.
